Default Week 2 Power Rankings - The Sleeping Giant Awakes

Week 2 Record: (5-1-0) Season Record: (6-4-2)
Unfortunately for the rest of the league, with my 4th place positioning of the Florida Panthers in the Power Rankings last week, I woke a sleeping giant; a #1 ranked sleeping giant that stomped on all opposing teams in Week 2. It was simply a jaw dropping week for the Panthers whose offense was an unstoppable force, netting a league leading 29 goals, 11 more than the next two closest teams. Their first ranked Power Play was no joke either as it was successful 31% of the time. They also did an excellent job of keeping the puck out of their own net allowing the second least amount of goals (20), yet surprisingly, had the lowest ranked Penalty Kill Unit in the league. Not much went wrong in the Sunshine State this week and that offense that we all feared has suddenly come to life. Was this a one week wonder? I highly doubt it.

Key Player: NIKDAGREEK23 - Forward - 4gp | 7g | 12a | 19pts
This certainly could have gone to a few of The Greek's teammates but he gets the nod here. He was second in scoring (19 Pts.) to only red hot Banks, while playing two fewer games. He led all Florida forwards in both assists (12) and +/- (+11) and saved his best for last when during their final game of the week vs. Philly, Nik had 5 points and was named the games First Star.

Week 2 Record: (4-1-1) Season Record: (8-2-2)
If not for the tremendous resurgence of Florida this week, Toronto certainly would have retained their #1 ranking from last week. In their doubleheader this week with the Panthers they split the series, with one game going to OT, and the other, a lopsided victory for Toronto. However, where the Panthers were able to not lose another game in week 1, the Leafs were not as fortunate, getting shut out by Colorado to end the week. Regardless, Toronto is still one of the leagues top team, and that starts from the crease out. With the play of BBB and the team defense on this squad they have been like Ebenezer Scrooge when it comes to allowing their league low 13 goals. Even with the man down, the Leafs haven't skipped a beat, killing off 89% of opposing teams power plays. They were in the middle of the pack when it came to goals for (18) and had a Power Play that was ranked 2nd in the league; 2nd to only Florida. Definitely not a disappointing week for Toronto by any stretch and I certainly expect them to be near or at the top of the rankings in Week 3.

Key Player: allthway - Defense - 4gp | 0g | 1a | 1pts
His statistics may not be flashy, but allthway was a rock on the blue line for the Leafs this week. He led all Toronto defensemen in +/- with a +5, had an outstanding D-Rating of 94.3, and was a physical force with his 23 hits. With his team slipping to #2 this week I expect Russ to come out with a chip on his shoulder in week 3; a shoulder that just might lay out some opposing forwards.

Week 2 Record: (2-3-1) Season Record: (5-5-2)
The Avalanche have been quite the enigma thus far this season, and similar to last week, they remain in the third position again. Defensively, it was a struggle for Colorado this week as they were tied with Philadelphia with 23 goals allowed (most in the league) and had a PK successful 75% of the time (ranked 3rd). Offensively, they were ho-hum, tied with Toronto (18 goals for) while sporting a Power Play (17%) that needs to be better considering the offense on this club. They were able to hand #2 ranked Toronto it's only regulation loss this week but struggled mightily against #1 ranked Florida, getting outscored a combined 12 - 4 in the two games played. This is not the week I expected from Colorado and if they are going to get back on track they need to get some secondary scoring and cut down on the goals against. If they can address those needs, they should definitely be in the thick of the Power Rankings race next week.

Key Player: No Regretzkys - Forward - 5gp | 2g | 12a | 14pts
From one of the Three Stars one week to the Key Player the next, NR has been on fire all season thus far. His offensive numbers are off the charts, with his 14 points in 5 games (12 of which are assists). And in one of their only two wins this week, he was the crucial cog, scoring the game winner in a 4 - 3 Overtime win versus Philadelphia. He was also named the First Star in that victory.

Week 2 Record: (1-4-1) Season Record: (5-6-1)
As we approach Halloween, it seems that the Flyers had on their Jekyll and Hyde costume this week. In stark contrast to Week 1, Philadelphia struggled mightily in Week 2 to string together any sort of momentum. They started off the week with a huge OT win versus Colorado but after that, it was all downhill, which was directly related to their league worst 14 Goals For. The Flyers simply couldn't find their scoring touch, especially on the man advantage, where they were successful a head scratching, 0% of the time. To add on to their woes even more, their Goals Against, which had been a strong suit in week 1, was tied for the league worst (23) this week. One major bright spot for the Flyers was their outstanding Penalty Kill unit which was efficient a league leading 90% of the time but that certainly wasn't enough. Bench has his work cut out for him this week to see if he can light a fire under this roster and get them headed in the right direction once again.

Key Player: Makakk88 - Forward - 3gp | 2g | 4a | 6pts
In their only win this week, a 5 - 4 OT victory, Makakk was the difference maker for Philadelphia. He ended the game with 4 points, 3 of which were assists, and nabbed the game winner in OT. He was named the First Star of the game as well. If Philadelphia is going to turn things around, Makakk will need to continue playing at this high level that we are all accustomed to here at XBS.
