Default XBSHL Season 18: Roster Retentions

Hey everyone,

With the draft coming up on Saturday, the owners have finalized the list of players they will be retaining. Since this is our first time doing retentions in quite a while, I figured I would update everyone on the rules and guidelines. At the end of the last season, we established a salary tier system based on how each team finished during the regular season and playoffs. That tier system was used to facilitate the salary increases, which helps create a balance between the stronger and weaker teams. The tier system breaks down as follows:

Retention Tiers:
250k increase to non-playoff players ( Non playoff owners will not increase or decrease ).
500k increase to 1st round losing players.
750k million increase to cup losing players.
1.25 million increase to cup winning players.

Once the salary increases were complete, each team is given $14 million (+$1 million for each player a team lost to ownership) in cap space to retain players from their previous roster. Free agent signings, rookies and owners who did not return from last season were exempt from being retained by their team. If you’re still with us after all of that, here are the finalized retention lists heading into the draft.

Calgary Flames
amazingviper - $7,750,000
Dynasty18 - $5,750,000
-----------------------------
Total Retained: $13,500,000

Ottawa Senators
shockazulu - $7,000,000
Berks - $1,500,000
-----------------------------
Total Retained: $8,500,000

Detroit Red Wings
BTW8892 - $3,250,000
SoulControlla99 - $2,500,000
TOMPKINSx05 - $2,250,000
-----------------------------
Total Retained: $8,000,000

Nashville Predators
-----------------------------
Total Retained: N/A

Florida Panthers
NIKDAGREEK23 - $5,750,000
TheBossCwC - $2,000,000
-----------------------------
Total Retained: $7,750,000

Toronto Maple Leafs
Light The Lamp - $8,750,000
-----------------------------
Total Retained: $8,750,000

As of this post going up, players who were retained will be assigned to their respective team locker rooms and rosters. For everyone else, get ready for an event filled Saturday evening as we kick off our Season 18 draft! Also, we’re planning on having another draft show on Twitch, so stay tuned for more information regarding that.

Nice retention list, Detroit looking in good shape with a solid foundation in BTW, Soul, and Tompkins. They're in a unique position where they can go all out on 2 or 3 players of their choice if they decide to go that route. Lots of money for them to spend on 6 or 7 players, definitely a team to watch out for tomorrow.

Ottawa makes a smart decision to keep Mr Norris, and Berks! I almost don't remember how Berks went for so cheap last season, but keeping him for 1.5 is a steal, especially after a productive season last year. Regretzkys having the owners salary is possibly the biggest bargain out there. The Sens are starting off the season right and are also looking in good shape heading into tomorrow's draft.

Krim keeps Viper and Dynasty in Calgary, no surprise there. He gets to reunite with his boys, and it'll be interesting to see if he tries to re-build the S13 champion Flames squad. One might argue that Krim could've drafted them for less on draft day since they are coming off career lows, but whatever the case.. he keeps two very experienced and skilled players together. They always seem to wind up on the same team together, how cute.

Nashville keeps two solid all around guys in Zaunbie and Laynher, honestly can't go wrong with keeping both guys. Zaunbie is one of the most consistent players out there and can dish out a few game changing hits if he continues to play as a power forward. Laynher makes the move to defense and looked really good down the stretch on the blueline. Also a good team guy. Grandpa might be the most unpredictable owner in the draft, being one of the newer guys, so it'll be fun watching what he decides to do with his cash.

Florida starting off strong in keeping two players that played a huge part in their cup run last season. Nik had a career year last season in winning the Rocket Richard, and the Boss also put up big numbers. For 2 mil he's also a bargain. I'm curious to see if Florida tries to bring back a number of players from their squad last season, seeing how close they were to a cup.. or if they decide to tear it down and start with a different look.

Toronto keeping Light the Lamp is no surprise. I feel like he would've went for a lot more last season if more teams knew how good he was. Winning the Hart, Art Ross, the Stanley cup and an all-star award in one season... not bad.
ATW is a rookie owner but don't let it fool you, he seems to know the league inside and out. He's played/scouted with just about everyone and has a pretty good idea of what it takes to build a successful squad heading into the draft.

Good luck to all tomorrow, should be an awesome stream as usual. For those who are new and haven't seen the draft show before... prepare to have your socks blown off.
